Sponsored Display Ads: A Practical Guide for Amazon Sellers
Sponsored Display is Amazon's self-service display ad type. It targets shoppers by product context (showing your ad on specific product pages or categories) or by audience (such as people who viewed your product but didn't buy). Ads can appear on Amazon product pages, search results and off Amazon on third-party sites and apps.
For most sellers, the strongest uses are retargeting product viewers and defending or attacking detail pages. This guide explains each targeting option, bidding, creative and how to measure results.
Who can use Sponsored Display
Sponsored Display is available to sellers enrolled in Brand Registry, vendors, and agencies with clients in those groups, in supported marketplaces. As with other sponsored ads, your products need to be in eligible categories, and ads generally only serve when you hold the featured offer. Read Brand Registry for Amazon ads if you aren't enrolled.
Targeting options
| Targeting | How it works | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Contextual: product | Your ad shows on specific product detail pages or related placements | Competitor conquesting, cross-selling on your own pages |
| Contextual: category | Your ad shows on products in a category, refined by brand, price or rating | Broader reach in a category |
| Audiences: views remarketing | Shoppers who viewed your products (or similar ones) and didn't buy | Retargeting |
| Audiences: purchases remarketing | Shoppers who bought your products (or related ones) before | Repeat purchase, cross-sell |
| Audiences: Amazon audiences | In-market, interest, lifestyle and life event segments | Upper-funnel reach |
Contextual product targeting works much like Sponsored Products product targeting, with the difference that Sponsored Display can also reach beyond the standard detail page ad slots. For ASIN selection tactics, see how to target competitor ASINs.
Bidding and optimization goals
When you create a Sponsored Display campaign, you choose a cost type and an optimization goal:
- Cost per click (CPC): you pay when someone clicks. Usually paired with optimizing for page visits or conversions.
- Viewable impressions (vCPM): you pay per thousand viewable impressions. Usually paired with optimizing for reach, for awareness goals.
- Optimize for conversions: Amazon raises or lowers bids toward shoppers more likely to buy.
- Optimize for page visits: focuses on clicks to the detail page.
- Optimize for reach: focuses on viewable impressions.
For performance-focused sellers, CPC with conversion optimization is the usual starting point. vCPM campaigns are harder to judge on ACoS and suit brands with a clear awareness goal and budget to match.
Creative
Sponsored Display can auto-generate ads from your product image, title, price, rating and Prime badge. You can customize with your logo, a headline, custom images and, in some placements, video. Amazon reviews custom creative against its ad policies. Start with the auto-generated version, then test custom creative once you know which targets work.
Three campaigns most sellers should start with
- Views remarketing: shoppers who viewed your products in the last 30 days and didn't buy. This tends to be the most efficient Sponsored Display campaign. Details in Sponsored Display retargeting.
- Own-ASIN defense: target your own product pages with ads for your other products, so the ad slots on your page show your brand instead of a competitor.
- Competitor conquesting: target specific competitor ASINs where your product has a clear advantage (price, rating or feature).
Worked example: reading results
A pet supplement brand runs all three for 30 days:
| Campaign | Spend | Sales | ACoS | NTB orders | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Views remarketing 30d | $300 | $1,500 | 20% | 40% | Scale budget |
| Own-ASIN defense | $120 | $720 | 17% | 10% | Keep, it's defensive |
| Competitor conquesting (8 ASINs) | $450 | $990 | 45% | 85% | Prune to the best 3 ASINs |
With a 35% target ACoS, conquesting looks over budget, but its orders are almost all new-to-brand. Check each ASIN target: if three of the eight produced most of the sales at ~30% ACoS, keep those and pause the rest. Use the ACoS calculator to check each target's numbers.
Setting up a contextual product targeting campaign
- In the Amazon Ads console, create a Sponsored Display campaign and choose contextual targeting.
- Choose CPC billing and optimize for conversions.
- Add the products you want to advertise. Keep products with very different prices in separate ad groups.
- Select 'Products' and add specific ASINs: competitors where you win on price, rating or features, or your own ASINs for defense and cross-sell.
- Set bids per target. Start around Amazon's suggested bid and adjust after 2 weeks.
- Review the auto-generated creative and add a logo or headline if the option is available.
- Set a daily budget and launch.
For category targeting, refine the category by price range and star rating so you don't show up on pages where your product looks expensive or weak by comparison. A $40 product shown on a page full of $15 alternatives rarely converts.
Sponsored Display vs Sponsored Products product targeting
Both can target a competitor's detail page, so which should you use? Sponsored Products product targeting shows a standard sponsored product ad in detail page ad slots and in some search placements when the ASIN is searched. Sponsored Display can reach additional placements on and around the detail page and can serve with custom creative. In practice, many sellers run their best competitor ASINs in both and compare cost per order after 30 days. If one clearly wins, shift budget to it. Keep in mind that Sponsored Products for sellers uses a 7-day attribution window and Sponsored Display uses 14 days, so the Display numbers will look somewhat better by default.
Measurement notes
- Sponsored Display uses a 14-day attribution window and, for vCPM campaigns, can include view-through conversions. That makes it look stronger than click-only metrics would.
- Retargeting naturally reaches shoppers who were already close to buying. Some of those sales would have happened anyway, so treat its ACoS as an optimistic figure.
- Use new-to-brand data to judge conquesting and audience campaigns. See new-to-brand metrics.
Optimization rules
- Product targets with 20+ clicks and no orders: pause or lower the bid 30%.
- Audience campaigns with ACoS above target for 3+ weeks: shorten the lookback window or lower bids.
- Add negative product targets for ASINs that waste spend in category campaigns.
- Keep remarketing budgets from capping out daily; they are usually your highest-intent Sponsored Display traffic.
Common Sponsored Display mistakes
- Launching broad Amazon audience campaigns (interests, lifestyle) on a small budget and judging them on ACoS after a week.
- Leaving your own detail pages undefended, so competitors' ads sit next to your Add to Cart button.
- Mixing a $12 accessory and a $90 main product in one ad group with one bid.
- Ignoring the view-through component in vCPM reporting and assuming every attributed sale came from a click.
AdSpark's bid optimizer and rules engine work across Sponsored Display campaigns as well, and its budget pacing can shift money from weak conquesting targets to retargeting when one is capped and the other isn't.

Where do Sponsored Display ads appear?
On Amazon product detail pages, in and around search results, and off Amazon on third-party websites and apps, depending on the targeting and creative.
Is Sponsored Display worth it for small sellers?
Views remarketing and own-ASIN defense are usually worth testing once you have steady traffic. Upper-funnel audience campaigns are harder to make profitable on a small budget.
What attribution window does Sponsored Display use?
14 days. vCPM campaigns can also count view-through conversions, so compare Sponsored Display to Sponsored Products carefully.
How is Sponsored Display different from Amazon DSP?
Sponsored Display is self-service with simpler targeting and no minimum spend. Amazon DSP offers more audience and inventory options with more setup. See Amazon DSP vs sponsored ads.
